New flooring products
If you have taken a walk through the flooring isle of your local hardware store recently then you have surly seen some of the new hardwood flooring products that are now available for homeowners to install themselves. You probably thought to yourself “they make it look and sound so easy but whats the catch”? These new flooring products are as easy as flooring installation can get but you still have to have some basic tools and a basic understanding of their use if you are thinking of buying them.
Also, you have to understand that flooring involves things like “base board and trim work as well. The fact is that most of these new hardwood flooring products are “floating floors” in that they aren’t actually nailed down. That can be a tough concept for a homeowner to grasp as most people like things that are attached to their homes to be “nailed on”. Carpeting isn’t nailed down and it sits just fine, so that is the best way to think of a floating hardwood floor.
Besides, the new hardwood flooring products “plug together” solidly so don’t worry. If you can do basic cuts with a miter saw then you can do the cuts that are required to install your own “floating” hardwood floor and base board along the walls. A few things for your “to do” list before you get started are things such as “removing base boards along walls with a good flat bar without tearing up the sheet rock.
Buying a nice “cheap” miter saw and learning to use it. Deciding on your new base board if you can’t get the existing base boards off the walls intact, which is rarely possible. Leveling and repairing any problems in the floor itself. Remembering to allow the flooring product to sit in the residence to adjust its water content to the humidity of the room if the instructions call for it.
